Royal Marble Con Project

In Royal Marble Con Project on November 24, 2010 at 6:20 pm

This is an update on a breeding project that has been ongoing for about 2 years to try to improve the colours in the marble/calico convict cichlid (Archocentrus nigrofasciatus). Yes I did hybridize them with leucistic Honduran Red Points (Amatitlania siquia). I’m several generations into the project and I’m focusing on creating two colour types:

1. a whiter base colour marble as opposed to the original marble convict’s pink base colour. I’ll probably call these “Italian Marble” just cuz some of the whitest marble tile comes from Italy.

and

2. a more intensely coloured marble that shows some of the brighter blues and greens of the HRP. These guys I’m calling “Royal Marble“. Check out the following pix of a couple of my nicer Royal Marble females.

Royal Marble Convict female!

She's definitely queen of the tank!

Tons of iridescence in the unpaired fins! Wow!

A younger Royal Marble that has the HRP-like blue sheen over the body.

This female is darker overall with deeper blue on her gill covers.

Even though she's only an inch long, this female is still my fave so far.

Blue Peruvian Zebra Shrimp!

In Blue Peruvian Zebra Shrimp on November 24, 2010 at 5:41 pm

These came in yesterday at Aquatic Kingdom. Euryrhynchus amazoniensis! Wow that’s more than a mouthful! Cute little macrobrachium type shrimp that stay small and range in colour from reddish brown to pale sky blue. I tried to pick out the bluest ones.

Euryrhynchus amazoniensis pair on java fern leaf.

Blue Zebra male - notice the very large claws.

Blue Zebra female - smaller claws than the male.

Berried (holding eggs) Blue Zebra female.

Berried female again, different view.

Pretty nasty looking chompers!

Euryrhynchus amazoniensis are said to prefer softer, low pH water.

Very cool, colourful and rare little shrimp!
